YEOVIL Town plunged deeper into the Championship relegation mire when they lost to fellow strugglers Charlton Athletic.

Goals from Joel Grant and Kieffer Moore were not enough for the Glovers, who now find themselves six points from safety, having played two more games than Tuesday’s opponents, now three places above.

Grant equalised for Yeovil on 12 minutes after Astrit Ajdarevic had fired the hosts in front two minutes earlier.

Dorian Dervite headed Charlton back in front and Marvin Sordell added a third on 51 minutes.

Moore pulled one back for Yeovil when he shot into an empty net following a defensive mix-up but the damage had been done, leaving Yeovil staring down the barrel of relegation back to League One.

Manager Gary Johnson admitted the defeat had been damaging and cited defensive lapses at the beginning of each half as his side’s downfall.

He said: “It was a damaging defeat – we knew that before the game if we lost it wouldn’t do us any favours and if we won we could’ve put ourselves in a decent position.

“We always say about the first five minutes and the concentration, whether it is the first half or the second half – and the boys have to learn to concentrate as individuals as well as a team.

“Of course, all three goals were in the first five minutes of the first half and then the second half.

“The result hurt and the way it ended hurt – we thought we had a couple of free-kicks that we would have had a last couple of chances to get an equaliser.

“It will take a couple of days to get over this one but we have to try and get over it and until the fat lady sings, we have to keep going.”
