Brighton defeat "the story of our season," says Gary Johnson
YEOVIL Town manager Gary Johnson says Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Brighton was ‘the story of their season,’ after the Glovers relegation from the Championship was confirmed.
Second half goals from Kazenga LuaLua and Jesse Lingard sealed the win for the home side – and Johnson said the nature of the defeat summed up their season, but praised the efforts of the fans and the players during a rollercoaster campaign.
He said: “That’s the story of our season, right there, in eight minutes.
“We’ve hit the crossbar twice at nil-nil and had a couple of half opportunities – and then let a team in at the death, when a little bit of quality catches you at this level.
“But the lads couldn’t give any more, the supporters couldn’t give any more and we’ve come up against some really good sides at this level and we have competed.
“Sometimes people don’t realise how much it means [to the fans].
“When you look in their eyes you can see how passionate they are and how supportive they’ve been.
“The reception we got from the Brighton fans as well was fantastic - they knew we’d given it a right go.
“I had a lump in my throat going to our fans and a lump in my throat going to their fans, when they were clapping us off the pitch.”
It was Yeovil who came closest to opening the scoring on 18 minutes when Ruben Palazuelos’ shot rattled the crossbar from 20 yards.
Orlandi then glanced a header wide as Brighton began to grab a foothold in the game but Yeovil stood firm and Sam Hoskins forced Tomasz Kuszczak into a smart save.
Joe Edwards grazed the crossbar with a powerful effort early in the second half but with 13 minutes remaining, LuaLua broke the deadlock when his cross-come-shot evaded Stech.
Lingard doubled the Brighton advantage in added time, as he stroked home March’s cross from the centre of the penalty area.
Yeovil Town finish the season at home to Middlesbrough this Saturday (May 3), with the game kicking off at 12.15pm.
