Yeovil Town legend fights for compensation

AN Ilminster pub landlord has been named as the other driver involved in a horrific road smash which last week forced Yeovil Town footballer Darren Way to officially retire from the game.

The accident in December, 2008, on the Cartgate link road on the outskirts of Yeovil saw a van being driven by Yeovil Town stadium technician Bruce James and passenger Way in collision with another vehicle.

Way, who has now taken up a coaching role at Yeovil Town, told the Express he would be taking legal action against the other driver involved in the accident in a bid to win compensation in a civil case.

The other driver has now been named as Alan Mackay, landlord of the Bell Inn at Ilminster.

Way’s solicitor, Paul Mulderrig, of Mulderrigs Solicitors, said: “Darren has started court proceedings against the other driver.

“At the moment there’s a dispute about who was responsible for the accident.”

Mr Mulderrig said no criminal charges had been brought as a result of the accident and it could take up to 12 months before any case was heard before the civil courts.

Mr Mackay, who has been at the Bell since 2008, told the Express the matter was in the hands of his insurance company’s solicitors.

“There’s nothing more I can really add to that,” he said.

Way, a legend at Yeovil’s Huish Park stadium, where he made over 270 appearances for the Glovers, suffered multiple life-threatening in-juries in the accident, and it was touch and go whether he would survive.

The 30-year-old midfielder needed nine operations on a painful road to recovery, but announced last Thursday that he was finally having to concede defeat in his year-long battle to return to playing.
