Barry Fry is on his way to Yeovil Town

By Steve Sowden »

THE larger-than-life character of Barry Fry will be the guest speaker at a sportsman’s dinner at Yeovil Town in March.

The event, compered by local comedian Jimmy Quinn, will be held at Huish Park on Thursday, March 11, from 7.30pm.

A club spokesman said: “Barry Fry is one of the most recognisable faces from British football over the past thirty five years in a career with more ups and downs than a rollercoaster.

“A playing career with few highlights has been usurped with a long career in management starting in 1974 with Dunstable Town.

“He remained in non-league and was most famous initially for his 15 years at Barnet, split only by a season in charge of Maidstone.

“His tempestuous relationship with chairman Stan Flashman was the stuff that dreams were made of for the press.”

Yeovil Town fans may remember Fry even making a playing appearance at Huish for Barnet during an end-of-season friendly where the then Glovers’ boss Brian Hall also came on as a substitute.

Fry had later spells with Southend United, Birmingham City and Peterborough United saw him fill thousands of columns of newsprint with his thoughts and musings.

The dinner at Huish Park on March 11 is priced £35 per person or £300 for a table of ten and will provide a wonderful evening of fun, friendly chat and fascinating stories.

There will also be a charity auction afterwards.
