THE A358 was closed from midday into late at night after 200 litres of diesel spilled onto the road.

A tanker lost all of its fuel between the A378 in Thornfalcon and the A303 at Southfields Roundabout in Ilminster earlier today (October 10).

Police closed the road until firefighters arrived.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service recieved multiple calls about the incident at 11.47am yesterday (October 10) and sent one fire engine and one Environmental Protection Unit from Taunton to the scene.

When crews arrived at the scene the incident commander confirmed a 200 litre diesel leak from one heavy good vehicle onto the highway.

Crews got to work attempting to isolate the leak using environmental protection equipment and liaising with highways agency.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said they were assisting firefighters and Highways England with the road closure.

A spokesman for Somerset County Council, said: "Our highways team is using fibre on extensive diesel spill near Hatch Beauchamp and assessing whether further resurfacing work may be required.

"Road remains closed between Ilminster and Taunton so allow extra time on alternative routes."
