THE second phase of the Steam Coast Trail linking Washford to Old Cleeve is set to officially open this weekend.

Phase One of the multi-use path which links Dunster Beach with Blue Anchor which has proved a big success - barring an ongoing dispute with chalet owners at Blue Anchor over a rights of way issue.

The route is well-used by cyclists, runners and walkers as well as wheelchair users and those with mobility scooters and enables visitors to enjoy the countryside as well as great views of the steam train.

The new stretch of path will link Old Cleeve at Dragon's Cross to Washford at Cobblers Steps, near Old Cleeve School.

It will be officially opened by the Friends of the Steam Coast Trail between 2pm and 4pm on Sunday (October 21), with people gathering on the path behind Washford Station.

The Minehead Eye team will be putting on some free, fun activities for kids to celebrate, while Country Grill and Styles Ice Cream will be on hand selling refreshments.

The event will have something for all ages so whether your preferred mode of transport is on foot, by bicycle, skateboard, scooter or roller-skates, you are encouraged to head down and trial the trail for yourself.

The Steam Coast Trail aims to be accessible, encourage tourism and exercise; and allow people to avoid a dangerous stretch of the A39.
