SCHOOL CLOSURES: Somerset schools closed due to snow on Friday, February 1


Combe St Nicholas was the first to announce its closure, revealing yesterday that treacherous conditions would keep them shut for a second day in a row.

Exford Primary School followed suit this morning, citing 'treacherous icy roads' as the reason for its closure.

Some Somerset schools have revealed they will be shutting early today and more extreme winter conditions are forecast for the afternoon.

Here is a full list of the schools, as well as details given about closure times and transport:

  • Ashlands C of E First School, Crewkerne - In line with other schools in the area, due to the predicted hazardous weather (Amber warning given by Met Office) and travel conditions for later today (31st January), we will be closing at 2.00pm.   A decision about whether the school will reopen tomorrow will be made by 7.30am in the morning and parents will receive a text message.
  • All Saints CofE Primary - Due to weather warnings, we are closing the School at 12.30pm today.
  • Avishayes Primary School & Early Years Centre - School will close at 2 p.m. today due to the amber warning from the met office. 
  • Buckler's Mead Academy, Yeovil - Due to severe weather warnings, we are closing the Academy at 1pm today.  The school will reopen on Monday 4th February.
  • Barwick and Stoford C P school, Yeovil, Somerset - Due to severe weather warnings we are closing te school at 12 noon today.
  • Brymore, Cannington - School open today (Thursday) however boys can go home from 1.15pm with permission from parents. Minehead and Williton buses to leave at 1.30pm
  • Charlton Mackrell Primary School, Charlton Mackrell - Due to severe weather warnings, the school is offering an early collection of children from 1.00 today (Thursday). There will be staff in school until 3.15 if you are not able to collect your child/ children. All clubs are cancelled. We will notify you of any furthur changes for tomorrow as soon we know.
  • Combe St Nicholas - School closed today and tomorrow due to extreme conditions caused by ice and lack of gritting.
  • Countess Gytha Primary School, Queen Camel - Due to severe weather warnings we are closing the school at 2.30pm TODAY (Thursday 31st January), please collect children from 2pm.
  • Crowcombe Primary School, TA4 3AA - Partial opening due to forecasted weather conditions
  • East Coker Community Primary School, East Coker, Yeovil - Due to the predicted adverse weather conditions and Met Office yellow weather warning. We have decided that, for the safety of all, to close the school at 1pm. The buses will be running and collecting at 1.30pm.
  • Exford Primary School - Closed today 31st January 2019 due to treacherous icey roads.
  • Fairmead School, Yeovil - The school will close at 1.30pm today due to the severe weather warning.  School transport has been arranged to collect pupils.
  • Fiveways School - Due to predicted adverse weather conditions the school will be closed from 1.00pm Thursday 31st January 2019
  • Haselbury Plucknett First School - We have made the decision to close at 2pm due to the current Amber weather warning in place for our region.
    Swimming has been cancelled and we are asking for all school and preschool children to be collected at or before 2pm. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Please keep visiting our website and facebook pages for more updates for the coming days.
  • Holyrood Academy, Chard - The school will close at 2.00 pm today due to the amber warning from the met office.  More information on the Academy website www.holyroodacademy.com
  • Huish Episcopi Academy - The school will close at 2.00 pm today.  More information on the Academy website www.huishepiscopi.net
  • Hinton St George - Due to the predicted incoming snow and in line with other local schools, we will be closing today at 1.30pm.
  • Holy Trinity Church School, Yeovil - Due to severe weather warnings we are closing the school at 1.30pm today.
  • Kingsmead School, Wiveliscombe - Kingsmead School will close at 2.30pm due to the amber weather warning.  All buses will arrive at 2.30 to transport students home. 
  • Maiden Beech, Crewkerne - Due to an amber weather warning the school will be closing early at 1.35 today (Thursday 31 January).  Buses have been requested for 1.35.  Parents are requested to ring the school to confirm their child can either walk home or they will be collected.  A decision about whether the school will reopen tomorrow will be made in the morning and parents will receive a text message.   • Merriott First School, Merriott - Due to the Amber Warning for snow that is now in place the school will be closing at 2pm.
  • Milford Infants' School, Yeovil - Due to the yellow weather warning, to allow families and staff to get home safely before the forecast heavy snow, we have taken the decision to close the school at 2pm. Please collect your child from their classroom at 2pm. Thank you.
  • Milford Junior School, Yeovil - Due to predicted adverse weather conditions, we are closing the school at 2pm.  Please see the school website for further details.
  • Misterton C of E First School - In line with other schools in the area, due to the predicted hazardous weather (Amber warning given by Met Office) and travel conditions for later today, we will be closing at 2.00pm.   A decision about whether the school will reopen tomorrow will be made by 7.30am in the morning and parents will receive a text message.
  • Neroche Primary School Broadway, Ilminster - Due to our villages no longer being gritted by Somerset County Council, we will be closing at 2pm due to the predicted snowfall - the safety of our community comes first.
  • Oaklands Primary School, Yeovil - Due to severe weather warnings we are closing the school at 1.00pm today.
  • Pen Mill Infant & Nursery Academy - Due to severe weather warnings we are closing the school at 1.00pm today
  • Preston Academy, Yeovil - School to close at 12.30pm. County School transport to pick students up at 12.30pm. School site will be closed by 1pm. More information on School website: www.prestonschool.co.uk
  • Reckleford School and Nursery, Yeovil - Due to severe weather forecast the school and nursery will be closing from 1.00pm today.
  • Richard Huish College, Taunton - As a result of the Met Office issuing an amber warning for Taunton and the Southwest from 2:00pm this afternoon and that we have received phone calls from a number of bus companies indicating that they will not be running bus services later this afternoon, we have taken the decision to suspend classes from 12:35pm today. We will therefore be asking that all students and staff make their way home. This will also mean that this evenings parent consultation event will also be postponed.

    For students who would normally catch a bus from college at 4:40pm, we are working with the various bus companies to organise a shuttle service to Taunton bus station over the lunchtime period. If this applies to you, please could I ask that you check our social media for further information.

  • South Somerset Partnership School - Transport booked for 12.30. All school buildings will be closed from 1.00 Please check website for details about tomorrow.
  • Stanchester Academy - County transport have confirmed buses to collect at 1.15 to ensure all students and staff can get home before snow.
  • Selworthy Special School - School closing at 1.30pm due to Amber weather warning.
  • Shepton Beauchamp Primary School - School is open until 3.15pm with after school club cancelled.

    We are however happy for you to collect your child/ren from 1.30 pm, if you feel it is safer to do so, due to the weather forecast and non-gritted roads

  • St Dubricius - Due the partial closure of WSC and MMS following a yellow weather warning for our area we are giving the parents of children outside of the village the option to collect their children from 1.15 pm.
  • Stogumber Primary School, TA4 3TQ - Restricted opening due to forecasted weather conditions
  • St Mary and St Peter's Primary - School is open until 3.15pm with after school club cancelled.
    We are however happy for you to collect your child/ren from 1.30 pm, if you feel it is safer to do so, due to the weather forecast and non-gritted roads
  • St Michael's Academy, Yeovil - School will close today at 1pm due to the potential bad weather
  • Tatworth Primary School - Due to the adverse weather forecast the decision has been taken to close the School at 2.30pm today, Thursday 31 January 2019. 
  • Timberscombe CofE, Timberscombe - Parents offered the opportunity to collect children early from school due to weather warnings.
  • Wadham School, Crewkerne - In light of the amber warning now in force, we will close from 2pm.  Some of our buses may not arrive at school until 2:30.
  • West Coker CE VC Primary School - In line with other schools in the area, due to the predicted hazardous weather and travel conditions for later today, we will be closing at 1.00pm.
  • Westfield Academy , Yeovil - The school will be closing at 12.30. School transport will collect students at 12.30

For other schools and colleges in the area, changes are in place to their regular schedules. 

Children at Taunton Academy will not be taking part in afterschool activities (luckily, including detention).
