A SOUTH Petherton man who was found lying on a pavement in Yeovil town centre was so drunk he could barely stand.

Police were called to Newton Road after receiving reports that a male was shouting loudly and stumbling around the area in the early morning.

They found Glenn Kenneth Hayes who struggled to get to his feet and when he began swearing and making obscene gestures he was warned to stop.

However when he ignored their requests he was arrested and appeared in the dock before Somerset Magistrates at Yeovil.

Hayes, 31, of Quarry Piece Drive, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in Yeovil on January 15.

Prosecutor Emma Lenanton said that the police had a call from a member of the public at 7.45am saying a drunken male was in Newton Road shouting loudly and stumbling around.

“Officers found Hayes who was lying on the pavement and struggled to get up and they could see he was heavily intoxicated,” she said.

“He found it difficult to stand, was stumbling and swaying, and when asked to go away swore at the officer and then shouted expletives at a passer-by.

“He carried on making obscene gestures so they tried to move him away but despite warnings he continued to display the same disorderly behaviour and was arrested.”

Hayes was taken to Bridgwater police station and repeatedly said he was sorry saying he had been an “idiot” towards the officers and was detained until he was sober.

The court was also told the defendant had two previous convictions for offences of being drunk and disorderly in 2017.

Appearing unrepresented, Hayes said that he was stupid for having committed the offence.

“I want to apologise and I’ve not drunk since then because it is not doing me any good,” he said. “I’ve decided to knock it on the head.”

He was sentenced to a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
