FIREFIGHTERS were called to an Axbridge hotel after a candle set fire to a picture frame and artificial flowers.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called to The Oak House Hotel in The Square at 1.35am on Saturday (February 23) following a call from a resident who said alarms were sounding.

One fire engine from Cheddar, one from Burnham-on-Sea and a supporting officer went to the scene.

While fire control were on the phone to the resident they spoke to a passer by who was making a delivery opposite the hotel who said he had heard the alarm sounding and noticed a fire in the property.

The man entered the building and was able to extinguish most of the fire using a fire extinguisher.

Once firefighters arrived at the scene two breathing apparatus wearers entered the property with one hose reel jet.

The remaining fire, which was in the bar area of the hotel, was quickly dealt with by fire crews, who used a fire extinguisher, a hose reel jet, thermal imaging camera, two breathing apparatus and small tools to extinguish the fire.

The cause of the fire was accidental and duty of care was left with on site management.
