ANGEL Place has announced Active Living at Victoria Park Community Centre as the winner of its ‘Best of Bridgwater’ campaign, with the local group receiving £1,000 in additional funding from the shopping centre.

Angel Place launched the initiative in a bid to show support for local organisations, businesses and social enterprises, which offer projects, activities, schemes and skills opportunities for the benefit of the greater good.

Following submissions from a host of brilliant associations and groups across the town, Active Living at Victoria Park Community Centre was selected for its tireless work in providing a programme of events for over 50s who would like the chance to get out and meet others.

The group meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month – with the exception of August – from 9.45am for two hours, where for £1.50 visitors can take part in activities, gentle exercises, receive advice and forge new friendships.

From September, meetings will change to 10.30am to allow members to take advantage of the community centre’s over 55s lunch offer of a three-course lunch for £5.

A committee of volunteers organise regular opportunities for the group to go on trips that members themselves have requested.

The away days are subsidised, so very affordable and also suitable for people with disabilities.

Ann Lee, secretary at Active Living at Victoria Park Community Centre, said: “Our dedicated committee is made up of members who are have a passion towards bringing our community together.

"We encourage our members to get out and about, make new friends and keep active whilst also ensuring that they receive up-to-date information and advice about important matters.

"We currently have a lovely group of members and are always happy to welcome new faces.”

A spokesperson for Angel Place Shopping Centre said: “Best of Bridgwater has been a truly rewarding and inspiring experience for everyone involved and has enabled us to grow a deeper connection with the community.

“We are so impressed by all the applications and there were many deserving causes, but after careful consideration it was Active Living at Victoria Park Community Centre which stood out the most for us."
