A BRITISH man left in a critical condition following an assault outside a bar in Greece has died, it has been confirmed.

It is believed the man, thought to be from Somerset, was on the Greek island of Zakynthos - also known as Zante - for a stag do.

The 35-year-old was drinking at a bar in Laganas on Thursday, May 23, before he was reportedly threatened and pushed by two men.

The altercation continued on the street outside the venue where he was punched, according to Greek news sources.

The father-of-two is said to have suffered a severe head injury and received medical attention at a local hospital.

He was later airlifted to a hospital in Athens on May 24 where he remained in a critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit.

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed his death today (Thursday, May 30).

A spokesman said: "We are supporting the family of a British man following his death in Greece, and are in contact with the Greek authorities."

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is also assisting Greek authorities with their enquiries.

Greek media outlets are reporting that two men, aged 22 and 25, have been arrested in connection with the assault.
