A BUCKLAND St Mary man who went on a “rampage” in his partner’s house, destroying her property and smashing items, then picked up a glass and threw it at her hitting her leg and arm.

Fabio Romano had been drinking heavily when he lost his temper and after assaulting her shouted “I’m going to kill you”.

Terrified and afraid of what he would do next, the victim called 999 and locked herself in the bathroom until police arrived and arrested the defendant.

Romano, 39, of Stone Cottages, was brought before Somerset Magistrates at Yeovil in custody, where he pleaded guilty to assaulting his partner by beating her on May 28.

He also admitted causing criminal damage to a vase and other items belonging to her.

Prosecutor Rhys Jenkins told the court that the victim dialled 999 shortly after 11pm saying she was scared of her partner, who had been drinking.

He returned home from the pub at 10pm and continued to drink but then he suddenly became angry and threw an item at the television and it hit the flue pipe of the log burner.

“He then smashed a sentimental vase given to his partner by her mother and worth £200, knocked over a table and ripped a door from its hinges,” he said.

“He caused damage to other items during his rampage and then picked up a glass and threw it at her causing grazing and redness to her leg and cuts to her arm.

“He then shouted that he was going to kill her so she called 999 and locked herself in the bathroom until the police arrived and arrested Romano.”

Probation officer Joe Harper said the defendant had been drinking since midday and returned home from the pub about 9 out of 10 drunk.

“He does not recall the reason why he got into an altercation or why he lost self-control and started throwing things around the property,” he said.

“At the time he was going through a stressful situation at work as a chef but he is now full of remorse and regret and accepts that by throwing objects around one of them hit his partner.

“He had no intention of wanting to harm her whatsoever, regrets his behaviour and knows the victim must have been very scared at the time.”

He said Romano had recently completed a community order of 160 hours' unpaid work imposed last year and hoped to remain in a relationship with his partner and hoped she wanted that as well.

He said the defendant’s binge-drinking pattern needed to be assessed and said his thinking skills that night were clearly affected by the amount of alcohol he drank.

Defending solicitor Sam Morton said Romano accepted what he did that night was “very wrong”, however his recollection of events was quite poor due to the amount of alcohol he consumed.

The magistrate sentenced the defendant to an 18-month community order with a 15-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and ordered him to carry out the Building Better Relationships programme.

They ordered him to pay the victim £200 compensation for the damaged vase, along with £85 costs and an £85 victim surcharge.
