Division 1
Burnham United 2, Staplegrove 0

BURNHAM United are top of the early Division 1 standings, after beating Staplegrove on Saturday.

Patience was the key for the hosts, with Kane Powell and Curtis Bradshaw’s goals both coming in the last 15 minutes of the game.

Burnham boss Steven Hainsby said: “We weren’t at our best but we persevered; Staplegrove are a good, tough side, but we ground them down.”

Regarding the positive start his side has made to the new season, Hainsby added: “We’ve had a couple of lads join us, and everyone has worked so hard in pre-season.

“The camaraderie is the best it’s been since I’ve been here, and the lads are great to work with.”

They aim to keep up the momentum this Saturday (ko 2pm), at home to Cutters Friday in the Somerset Senior Cup first round.

Burnham United Reserves – who drew 2-2 at Yatton & Cleeve United Reserves thanks to goals from Declan Christie and Cain Smith – go to Banwell for their next Division 3 match on Saturday (ko 3pm).
