A WOMAN is in critical condition following a serious crash this morning involving a lorry and a car.

The M5 between J22 (Burnham-On-Sea) and J23 (Bridgwater North) left the road closed for most of the day but Highways England has confirmed the road is now re-open.

The crash happened at around 6am this morning (Saturday, November 16).

A woman has been taken to hospital with 'serious head injuries' following the incident and remains in critical condition.

Speaking at 3.15pm, a spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "We’d like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while we carried out an investigation at the scene.

"A female car driver who suffered life threatening head injuries remains in hospital in a critical condition.

"Enquiries into the incident are continuing.

"We’re keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident who may have dashcam footage to help our collision investigators.

Emergency services were sent to the scene and confirmed a car had run into the back of a lorry, and become stuck under the rear of the HGV with a female casualty still trapped inside the car.

Firefighters quickly got to work to stabilise the vehicle and the set about extricating the casualty from the car using hydraulic rescue equipment.

The female was taken by ambulance to hospital and the driver of the lorry was treated for shock.
