THE William Hill betting shop in Station Road, Taunton, has closed.

Customers wanting to place a bet are being redirected to the company's other shop in the town's East Reach.

William Hill announced in July that it was planning to close 700 of its shops nationwide, with 4,500 jobs at risk.

At the time, a spokesman said the reason for the closures was the Government's decision to reduce to £2 the maximum stake on B2 gaming machines, also known as fixed odds betting terminals.

He added: "Since then the company has seen a significant fall in gaming machine revenues, in line with the guidance given when the Government's decision was announced in May 2018."

He said the company would begin shutting shops by the end of this year.
