CUSTOMERS driving to a Taunton supermarket could soon enjoy a shop-while-they-wash-your-car experience.

Asda could house a car wash on part of its car park if planners give the go-ahead.

Waves Valeting Services Ltd has applied to Somerset West and Taunton Council for permission to install the facility on land outside the store in Creechbarrow Road.

The development would include a steel cabin and a canopy, along with an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera and is estimated to create four full-time jobs and four part-time roles.

The application says: "The introduction of the car wash will create sustainable economic growth in the area.

"It will have a positive impact on local employment."

The car wash would operate from 14 car parking spaces and could handle five or six cars at any particular time.

People having their cars washed and valeted are likely to be customers already travelling to the supermarket, so Waves argues that it will not result in more traffic in the area.

The announcement that Waves hopes to introduce the car wash at Asda comes in the same week that a McDonald's franchise opened in the former store cafe.
