HUNDREDS of people packed the streets of Chard to see the town’s Christmas illuminations turned on for the first time this year.

The lights switch on was preceded by by the fundraising Santa Run, which saw around 20 people take part.

Jason Baker, one of the event organisers, said: “The light switch on was a huge success with well over 500 people in attendance.

“The Christmas parade was led by Chard Majorettes and then Father Christmas followed on his sleigh.”

The lights were switched on by Cllr Baker as the mayor, along with Chard Carnival royalty.

Jason added: “I would like to thank the Chard Town Team for all of their hard work in maintaining the lights and putting on the event, and a big thank you to Chard Amenities team and SSDC for their help in putting the lights up again.”
