PLANS are underway to celebrate the centenary of a recreation ground opened as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the First World War.

Wiveliscombe 'Rec' has been spruced up ahead of an event on Saturday, August 15 next year to mark its 100th birthday.

The popular and well-used facility boasts a newly-renovated pavilion, an updated playground and increased access for all.

The rec is home to a heated open air swimming pool, rugby, cricket, tennis and football clubs, and is an inviting green space for relaxation.

The celebration event will feature a cricket match, children’s games, stalls, music, food, drink and more.

Management committee chairman Sylvia Cottrell said: "We want to show everyone how much we cherish this green and open space right at the heart of the town."

She is part of a yarnbombing group who plan to festoon the rec railings with crocheted and knitted designs during the celebrations.

Dr John Rees, chairman of the Wiveliscombe Recreation Ground Trust, said: "This is a vital part of our local heritage which we must preserve and promote."

Recent efforts have seen improvements that enable more people to enjoy the rec, with a new accessible-to-all swing on the playground funded with a grant from Viridor credits and local donations.

And a pathway across the top of the field by the stone war memorial pillar is now usable by wheelchairs and pushchairs, with an accessible picnic bench installed along the route.

The exterior of the pavilion has been repaired and repainted thanks to a large bequest from a former resident of the town, with volunteers matching the work on the inside by rejuvenating changing rooms and kitchen facilities. Eileen Mary Gardner, of Honiton, left £96,000 to the rec in her will in memory of her father, William Collard, a draper and boot seller in High Street, who retired in 1954.

Wiveliscombe Pool has a smart new surround, also benefitting from a Viridor Credits grant, while the rugby club with its fine clubhouse is thriving and the tennis club has seen a steady increase in players.

Spokesman Jeremy Toye said: "For the town’s sports fans and for those who just want a gentle stroll or snooze in the sun, Wivey Rec continues to offer its uniquely idyllic setting."
