IT is ‘unacceptable’ Wellington still doesn’t have a Post Office nearly six months on, says Taunton’s MP.

The One Stop closed in August last year, taking with it the town’s Post Office.

It was looking hopeful a new location had been found, but no concrete plans have yet been made.

Rebecca Pow, MP for Taunton Deane, has vowed to ‘keep up the pressure’.

She said: “It is unacceptable that Wellington continues to be without a Post Office given how many local people rely on it for important services.

“I continue to be in discussions with the Post Office and ministers to try and find a solution and I will keep up the pressure.”

Months have gone by and a solution hasn’t been found, leaving residents without vital services.

Many of the town’s councillors have voiced concerns about the lack of Post Office at recent council meetings, as well as district councillors.

Somerset West and Taunton Cllr Keith Wheatley said: “It was Rebecca’s Conservative government that turned the Post Office from a public service into a results-driven retailer, so perhaps some of us would see her comments as hypocritical.

“However, on a more positive note a major High Street chain have confirmed to me recently that they are actively looking at housing a Post Office in their Wellington branch, so all is not yet lost.

“Once again I’d like to recognise the considerable efforts that Post Office managers have made to resolve this issue.

“They didn’t make the decision to close One Stop, nor did they draw up the restrictive rules they have to operate under.”

While there still isn’t a Post Office in Wellington town centre, there is one in Rockwell Green.

A spokesperson for the Post Office said: “We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of Wellington Post Office. To assist our Post Office customers we increased the number of counters at nearby Rockwell Green Post Office.

“We also remain committed to providing Post Office services to central Wellington. We are trying to restore service as soon as possible.

“We have an interested retailer. Talks are at an early stage.”
