HIGHWAYS England has slammed motorists for their 'poor' driving after they drove straight through a road closure on the M5.

Representatives from Highways England closed the exit slip road at junction 22 (Burnham-on-Sea) on the M5 Southbound earlier today (January 30) due to a broken down lorry.

But while recovery vehicles were on their way to the scene Highways England officers witnessed 'at least 12 vehicles' drive straight through the road closure putting lives at risk.'

In a tweet Highways England said: "We have just witnessed at least 12 vehicles drive through our closure putting the lives of our traffic officers and recovery agents at risk.

"This is illegal and completely unacceptable driving. Please obey our closures, they are there for a reason! #PoorDriving #RoadSafety."

Highways England later tweeted and said the road closure had been lifted at around 4.45pm and all lanes were open as normal.
