A DRIVER was trapped after their van veered off the road and crashed into a tree.

Police called to the incident in the early hours of yesterday (Sunday) at ten minutes after midnight alerted the fire and rescue service.

No other vehicles were involved.

Fire crews arrived at the scene of the crash on the A37 at Key Hill, near Yeovil, within minutes and confirmed the driver was "seriously trapped".

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Crews worked alongside ambulance paramedics to stabilise the vehicle and casualty before preparing to extricate them using hydraulic cutting equipment, as well as a hydraulic winch.

"Due to the position of the vehicle and driver, crews had to work carefully to ensure a safe and steady extrication.

"Once released the casualty was conveyed to hospital via air ambulance.

"The incident was under control at 1.49am, whereby duty of care was left with the police."
