WINNERS of Crewkerne’s scarecrow competition have been announced.

The competition was organised to cheer up the town after the annual street fair was cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis.

Crewkerne District Rotary, organisers of the competition, gave £30 for the best household scarecrow and a bottle of bubbly for the winning business.

Sandra Shore, president of Crewkerne District Rotary, said: “We were nicely surprised at the number of entries we had, from the weird and wonderful to the more traditional.

“The residents of Crewkerne really pulled out all the stops to delight us.

“Our judges had a really tough time deciding on the winners, so hard was their job that they agreed to award runner-up certificates.

“We would like to thank all the residents of Crewkerne who took part and entered into the spirit of the competition. We look forward to what you come up with next year.”

Rachel Hill, owner of Rodfords Florist, said: “It was great winning. The scarecrow was fun to make, we enjoyed being kids again - roll on next year!

“Our scarecrow was made with two broom handles, cardboard tubes for arms, cushions for the body, and a football with a sack for the head. Raffia for her hair and then just a pretty dress and accessories.

“I won't tell mary mary quite contrary that she may be in the paper, don't want the fame to go to her head!”
