PROMISEworks calls for volunteers to mentor vulnerable children

Since lockdown, PROMISEworks have received several referrals for disadvantaged children, but the charity does not have enough mentors.

“We have had a large influx of referrals for the Taunton area since lockdown eased and unfortunately, we do not have enough mentors for them all,” said Christell Charles, case holder for Taunton.

“It is evident through talking to our mentors that a lot of young people have really suffered during lockdown especially with anxiety and low mood.

“We believe having a mentor to ‘be there,’ can make a young person who feels alone in the world feel that they have somebody by their side.”

Volunteers are given extensive training and assessments and then matched with a child or young adult.

Mentors need to be at least 21-years-old and will spend time and doing activities with their young person, such as going to the beach or dog walking.

They will need to commit to seeing the young person every week, or two weeks, for two years.

PROMISEworks recruit, train and support volunteers who provide long-term inspiring mentoring to the county’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged children aged five to 25.

The charity believes through a long-term, trusting relationship with a mentor, a child can develop the resilience, self-esteem and emotional wellbeing that will help them “To build. A life that works.”

Young people are referred into the service for a variety of reasons, including some who have suffered abuse or neglect.
