THERE has been 19 new coronavirus cases in Somerset in the latest 24 hour period, up to 5pm yesterday (Sunday, October 11).

Somerset West and Taunton have seen the largest increase, with seven new cases.

There were four new cases in Sedgemoor, three in South Somerset and five in Mendip.

The totals for each area are as follows:

  • Somerset West and Taunton - 634
  • Sedgemoor - 506
  • South Somerset - 482
  • Mendip - 287

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced today his plans for a new three tier system for areas with a high number of coronavirus cases.

The system consists of a medium alert level (current national measures including the 10pm curfew and the rule of six), a high alert level (prevents mixing between households indoors, with a rule of six outdoors) and a very high alert level (prohibits mixing indoors and in private gardens, as well as closing local pubs and bars).
