A VILLAGE primary school where a number of pupils have tested positive for Covid-19 and several teachers are self isolating is to remain closed for the rest of the week.

The decision to close Norton Fitzwarren Church School was taken yesterday (Monday) following a meeting between the acting headteacher and health and education representatives.

The school did not open yesterday after a small number of children were confirmed to have the virus and several teachers or people they live with were due to receive test results.

The outcome of those tests has not been publicised by the school.

But in a letter to parents and carers, acting head Kelly Birt said she had reviewed the situation with a Public Health England executive a Department of Education representatives, Somerset's senior primary advisor and Bath and Wells Multi Academy Trust director of operations Darren Ling.

Mrs Birt wrote: "All decisions that are made are in consultation and through discussions about cases.

"It was collectively agreed that the current new positive cases are isolated and not related to other bubbles in the school.

"We also discussed the procedures we have in place, and again it was agreed that these are robust, and that we should continue what we are doing, as this supports the main drive, which is to stop the spread of the virus.

"The safety of our children is paramount. Due to reduced staff numbers, I need to inform you that the school will remain closed to all bubbles including Acorns for the remainder of the week beginning Monday 30th November to Friday 4th December."

She added: "We hope that we will be able to open the school for the bubbles who are not self-isolating the following week, but the situation will be reviewed again at the end of the week by the same group who met today and dependent on the recommendations from that meeting, I will then inform you of the decision about reopening by end of Friday.
