A BROOCH measuring just 5.5cm wide is expected to reach between £600 and £800 at auction.

The oval brooch, decorated the Doves of Pliny in micro mosaics, is one of the lots being sold by Charterhouse in a two-day online specialist auction of silver, jewellery and watches with antiques and interiors next month.

It originates from Italy circa 1905 and is made of micro mosaic - featuring the Doves of Pliny made from tiny pieces of hardstone.

The original Doves of Pliny image comes from a Roman floor mosaic discovered in 1737 at Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli, which in turn is believed to be a copy of a lost ancient Greek mosaic at Pergamon.

The brooch, being sold by a collector from near Taunton, is in a gold mount and having survived two world wars and numerous owners, remains in beautiful condition.

It comes in the original fitted box, retailed by Charles Frodsham in Bond Street, London.
