THE number of positive Covid tests in Somerset has remained low in the latest 24-hour period.

The county council area saw 48 new confirmed cases, according to figures just released.

Of those, 16 were in South Somerset, which has seen 4,821 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic; 13 in Somerset West and Taunton (overall total 5,642); nine in Sedgemoor (overall total 4,813); and 10 in Mendip (overall total 3,140).

The rate of infection of the virus has dropped in all four districts according to the latest seven-day rolling figures.

In South Somerset the rate of infection per 100,000 people is 70.7 (down from 71.9 the previous day); in Somerset West and Taunton the rate is 101.2 per 100,000 (down from 113.5); in Sedgemoor it's 132.3 (down from 143.7); and in Mendip it's 77 (down from 79.6).
