PLANS to build ten houses in the centre of Chard have received backlash from residents – but the owner of the land says scheme is “much improved” in comparison to the historic 12 home scheme, consented a number of years ago.

The plan for 12 properties to the rear of 25 and 27 Fore Street in Chard was submitted in 2006 was approved in January 2007.

But the works were never carried out, and now the planning permission has lapsed.

Jonathan Gregory, from Nimrod Property Investments, who owns the land, believes the new plan for 10 houses is a much better scheme than the previous one.

The new plans include a mixture of two bed houses and one bed flats with private gardens to the rear of 27 Fore Street.

The plan is for the development to be a 'car free' site, as it is in the centre of town, with an electric gate for pedestrians to keep the site secure.

However, residents were concerned about the site, because the trees have already been removed, without approval of the new planning application.

“In 2006/2007, the site was cleared due to the previous application," said Mr Gregory.

“And all that was there in recent years, was self-seeded vegetation. We applied to the horticultural officer to remove the trees and received consent for this because none were of specimen grade.

“The housing supply in Chard is under pressure and surely this new scheme, with a tree-planting scheme, less homes, and a car free place is a better option?”

The planning application will now go before South Somerset District Council (SSDC).
