THE opening of Weymouth's much-anticipated new Burger King branch, which will create up to 20 jobs, has been delayed by more than two weeks - as work continues ready for it to open to customers later this month.

As previously reported, Burger King confirmed plans that it would be opening a new restaurant after job advertisements were posted online, including roles for a crew member, shift leader and a site manager.

The fast food giant will open a new restaurant inside a retail unit along with pizzeria Sbarro opposite Aldi at Link Park, Chickerell.

The project to transform the unit into the new fast food branch is now under way, with a number of workers on site fitting out the venue.

Large fences have been erected around the unit as its iconic signage has been installed onto the commercial building.

A spokeswoman for Burger King previously said the new restaurant at Link Park would open on Monday, May 3.

But in a new statement, a spokeswoman said: "The opening of the restaurant has been delayed and is now due to open on Wednesday, May 26."

The new restaurant at Link Park will create approximately 15-20 full and part-time positions.

The news of a new Burger King restaurant sparked excitement among residents, with many calling it 'great news for the town' which will create jobs in the area.

Describing itself as the second-largest hamburger chain in the world, Burger King is known for its flame-grilled burgers, famous Whopper burgers, chilli cheese bites, fries and hot drinks to eat in or takeaway.

The new restaurant opening is a part of Burger King’s expansion in Dorset, bringing the total number of branches in the county up to five. The fast food chain currently has branches in Broadstone, Poole and Bournemouth.

The announcement that Burger King has pushed back its opening comes after Sbarro also delayed its opening date.

The American pizzeria chain, which that specialises in New York-style pizza and other Italian-American cuisine, now has a provisional opening date of Friday, May 7, but this could also change.

Sbarro signage on the unit has already been installed with 30 to 35 jobs set to be created in the area.
