A NUMBER of homes in Crewkerne have been evacuated following a gas leak.
The leak followed a road traffic collision in East Street shortly before 3pm today (Tuesday, January 11).
Fire crews set up a cordon to ensure the safety of residents in the immediate area.
Staff from Wales and West Utilities attended to stem the gas leak.
A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "A vehicle was involved in collision with a gas box resulting in a confirmed gas leak.
"Crews carried out precautionary actions and police were also in attendance assisting with road closure.
"Local residents were allowed to return to their homes and the incident was handed over to the utility company."
East Street was expected to re-open at around 8.30pm.
Fire crews from Crewkerne, Taunton and Yeovil attended the incident.
