A FORMER County Gazette reporter is in training to run a mind-boggling 290 miles in six days in support of her friend, who is battling cancer.

Laura Briggs, aka the Somerset Running Mayor, is to attempt a first-time record when she takes on the Macmillan Way.

She is performing the challenge in support of her friend, Mo Laughton, aged 47, who is receiving palliative care for cancer, and to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Laura, who also worked for the Chard and Ilminster News and the Bridgwater Mercury, said: “Mo can't run. But I can run for her. I love running, and I've always wanted to run a challenge for a good reason.

"I couldn't really think of a better reason than to raise awareness and funds for the charity that has supported Mo and her family through the most difficult time of their lives.”

The Macmillan way links Boston, in Lincolnshire, to Abbotsbury, in Dorset, following existing footpaths, and occasionally joining short lengths of national paths.

The route was devised to raise awareness for Macmillan Cancer Support. Although many people have walked it, to date nobody has officially run it.

The mum-of-two, PR director and journalist will receive support from her husband and fellow runner Guy, local businesses and sports specialists, and hopes to raise £5,000 through the challenge.

Speaking of her friend’s initial devastating diagnosis and continued treatment, Laura, from Somerton, added: “Mo was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 40 and told the devastating news that she had only weeks to live. That was back in 2017.

“Her initial diagnosis was extended to a few months, with the onset of weekly chemotherapy.

"Six years on and Mo is still undergoing palliative care treatment through Yeovil Hospital's Macmillan Ward and is still able to enjoy a decent quality of life with her wonderful husband Ben.”

Genevieve Drinkwater, Macmillan senior fundraising manager, South West, and Midlands, ssaid: "Everyone who takes part in a fundraising event for Macmillan has their own special reason and the funds they raise help us to do whatever it takes to support people living with cancer.

"We cannot thank Laura, and her supporters enough.”

Laura’s challenge starts on Saturday, July 23.
