SOUTH Somerset District Council's Area West committee heard that they have scored another big hit with Opportunity Crewkerne last week.

Community regeneration officer Zoe Harris told members at a meeting on Wednesday that the X-Factor style event was as successful as the Opportunity Ilminster evening, which launched the council-backed scheme back in November.

A total of eight projects from around the town received a share of more than £30,000 after vying for public votes at the forum held at Wadham School at the end of January.

Zoe said: "We had a very, very busy evening, with 26 groups presenting and a total of 1392 votes placed.

"The feedback has been largely positive - people thought it was a fantastic platform for projects to get their ideas across and liked the idea that each presentation was limited to three minutes."

Committee chairman Cllr Kim Turner commented that the only downfall of the evening was that some people did not stay to watch the presentations, as they were able to place their votes before the event began.

To rectify this, councillors decided to return to the voting system used at Opportunity Ilminster, where people wanting to vote had to sit through all the presentations first.

Cllr Turner thanked everyone who took part in the event and the community for their support.

"Overall the night was a success," Zoe concluded.

"We look forward to delivering Opportunity Chard next month."
