THE salaries of GPs should be linked to the success of the treatments they deliver, according to Mark Formosa, the aspiring Conservative MP for Taunton Deane.

This week Mr Formosa visited the new cardiology unit in Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, where he was shown the range of services the hospital provides for heart patients.

The cardiology unit, which opened in the autumn, has a full set of secondary care cardiac investigative and treatment options and also offers many other facilities, including nurse led chest pain, heart failure, arrhythmia, and rehabilitation services.

Mark Formosa was accompanied by Somerset County Councillor Stephen Martin-Scott, who represents the Trull and who is chairman of the council's health scrutiny sub-committee.

Mr Formosa said: "I was extremely impressed with the new cardiology unit and it was comforting to learn that patients in Taunton Deane have access to some of the very best in medical care here on their doorstep.

"It was also interesting to hear from staff how much more they might be able to achieve if it was not for political meddling in the way the NHS is run.

"A Conservative government would link GPs' salaries to the success of the treatments they deliver, while scrapping the targets imposed by politicians in Whitehall which distort doctors' clinical decisions."
