The editor of the Somerset County Gazette has attended a Local Media Champions reception at 10 Downing Street.

Tim Lethaby, who is also South West regional editor for the Gazette’s owner Newsquest, attended the event in London on Wednesday April 19.

The gathering was organised by MP Lucy Frazer – who is the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport – to celebrate the importance of local news within communities, and Tim was invited by the MP for Taunton Deane, Rebecca Pow.

Tim said: “I was delighted to be asked to attend the Local Media Champions reception in Downing Street, as I am a keen campaigner for highlighting the role local news websites and papers play in their cities, towns and villages.

“I must admit, it was slightly surreal walking through the door of 10 Downing Street, but I am pleased that a spotlight is being shone on the hard work by journalists up and down the country, after what has been a difficult time for the local news industry.”

Rebecca Pow said: “Having worked in the media at all levels for much of my life I understand the valuable role our local press play and, in particular, papers like the Somerset County Gazette.

“I’m a keen supporter of their work in disseminating news and sharing local stories and information. They are, of course, a valuable link for me too as our local MP and I’m delighted to write my regular column for the paper; and I was so proud to invite Tim Lethaby to a special reception at No 10 Downing Street to thank him and all those that work for the Gazette, and to celebrate the part they play in our community.”

Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Lucy Frazer said: “Local journalism helps local areas stay connected, generates local pride and keeps communities engaged in local issues.

“Local journalists capture the heart of our communities and make sure politicians are doing their jobs better by holding them to account.

“It was wonderful to joined by local journalists from across the country in Downing Street last week - from community news sites, radio shows and free sheets - to thank them for their work to keep communities connected.”
