HERE is this week's column by Taunton Deane MP Rebecca Pow.

"The nature of my constituency work is inevitably wide ranging but representing those that most need help in one form or another is a priority, particularly the most vulnerable, including pensioners and those on low incomes. It is always pleasing when supports fall into place and I am delighted to report that within the first week of its rollout 99% of those eligible for the Government’s Disability Cost of Living Payment have received the £150 due them which is certainly welcome news.

"Welcome too is the Government's recently announced new national lung cancer screening programme for high risk 55-74-year-olds. The £270 million annual programme is expected to detect cancer in as many as 9,000 people and through earlier detection will help provide treatment earlier. Whilst the NHS has treated a record number of cancer patients in the last two years sadly we all know too many afflicted by this disease and the new lung cancer programme will aid the armoury of tools used to fight it.

"Fighting crime is another challenge, especially in our rural areas and this is a key concern of many in the constituency and that's why news that Avon and Somerset Police have exceeded their target of recruiting new police officers is being well received. The original target was 456 officers, and as of March this year, 558 have been recruited. I’ve met a number of local people who have changed careers to join the police service and are genuinely enjoying the switch, not to mention what a service they are doing to keep us safe.

"All those in our armed forces both past and present have also played and continue to play a vital role in keeping us safe and I was privileged to pay my respects at the flag raising ceremony in Parliament in honour of our valued Armed Forces Community ahead of Somersets' own Armed Forces Day this Saturday (July 1) in Vivary Park with an engaging range of events organised. Taking place right in the heart of Taunton as well as being a great way of showing our appreciation bringing people into the town will also benefit the local economy. As will the great sporting event coming up - the Somerset County Cricket Club T20 quarter final match on Friday July 7. What a tremendous achievement for the team to reach this stage; and to achieve a home draw is a real bonus knowing the dedicated following the club has and the huge crowd it will attract to the town centre. Having just officially opened the Riverain Lodge retirement complex right beside the river in town I know that some of the residents will be taking advantage of their central location and popping over to the county ground for the match! Wishing the team the very best of luck. I shall be rooting for you!
