WORK is being carried out to cut speed on a notorious accident blackspot outside Wellington.

Motorists are being urged to slow down and respect the highways team carrying out the work to introduce a new speed limit on the A38 at Beambridge.

Among the measures being introduced is a reduction of the speed limit to 50mph.

A Somerset Council said: “Road users in the area will have noticed two junctions by the ongoing resurfacing work near the Beambridge Inn are still closed.

"The delay has come as a result of Storm Ciaran.

“These have been closed to allow for two-way traffic signals as opposed to four-way, which helps mitigate disruption while the resurfacing is taking place.

“The scheme is still expected to finish on time – as long as weather conditions remain stable until Friday, November 24.

“All of this work is being undertaken now so that a 50mph speed limit can be introduced on this part of the A38, with the appropriate signage and lining in place.

“We believe this will reduce the historical problems of speeding and speed-related incidents in the area.”

There have been several serious and fatal road traffic collisions on the stretch of road in recent years.
