Carlisle United defender Jack Robinson is set to miss the start of next season.

The former Middlesbrough man needs surgery on his injured ankle.

And that means 22-year-old Robinson is not scheduled to return to action until late August.

Left-sided Robinson suffered a stress fracture to his ankle in United’s 1-0 defeat to Blackpool at Brunton Park on April 13.

He saw a specialist last week who confirmed that Robinson would need to go under the knife.

“We got the news [last] Thursday about Jack, that he is having to have surgery,” said manager Paul Simpson.

“So we're hoping that's surgery [this] week, but he's going to be out for four months with that once he has surgery.

“So the timing [for his recovery], if we can get him in for surgery [this] week, which is the plan, will be end of August.”

Robinson is among the Blues players under contract next season, having signed a two-year deal last summer.

He made 27 appearances in the 2023/24 campaign, on the left or in central midfield.

Simpson expects most of United’s other injured players to be fit for the start of pre-season in late June.

“Callum Guy [who is recovering from an ACL injury] and Jack Robinson won't be fit until August, September time,” said the manager.

“So that's a big blow, but I'm hoping that everybody else who will be under contract will be fit to start pre-season.”

United ended the campaign with a number of players on the treatment table.

Those out with respective injuries included Dan Butterworth, Taylor Charters, Josh Vela, Jack Ellis and Sean Maguire, with Paul Huntington also missing the final game of the campaign. The latter two players have since been released.

Loanees Terry Ablade and Jokull Andresson have long been sidelined while the reasons for Joshua Kayode’s unavailability for the final two games, despite a recent return from long-term injury, remain unclear.

Some of United’s teenage prospects were also unavailable for the final weekend, with Aran Fitzpatrick suffering an ankle problem, Sam Hetherington suffering damaged ribs and Josh O’Brien set for a scan on a knee injury.
