Counterfeit goods worth more than £10,000 were seized at a car boot sale in Taunton last weekend.

A team from Somerset County Council's Trading Standards, working alongside police, bagged up 638 DVDs and CDs -- including some titles, like Spiderman 2 and Shrek 2, which are not yet out on DVD -- at the event at Taunton Racecourse on Sunday.

The massive operation came just weeks after Trading Standards announced that in the past five years they have confiscated over £1million worth of counterfeit goods.

The seven-figure total was reached after a series of raids on holiday markets across the county during August, and things don't seem to be improving with the department admitting that there is a big problem in this area.

Andy Fowler, of Trading Standards, said: "No arrests were made, but we did seize evidence from stallholders who are now under investigation for alleged offences under the Trademarks Act."

"There's a big problem with people selling counterfeit products in local markets and car boot sales. It took the value of goods seized to well over £1million.

"There are huge volumes of counterfeit goods in the area."

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset police said they have been working closely with Trading Standards at such events as part of a nationwide crackdown into the selling of counterfeit goods.

"We look to work closely with Trading Standards at every opportunity to get people selling illegal counterfeit goods off the streets and car boots sales are places where these goods are often sold," he said.

"This is another example of us working with Trading Standards to get these goods off the streets.

"If we have to take goods away from the scene it may take more than on officer to bag the goods up as evidence.

"The process can be quite a time consuming job."
