MULLION 1 v FALMOUTH TOWN 3

A YOUNG and spirited Mullion side gave a determined performance against their more experienced opponents despite going down 3-1 in the Jolly's Combination League.

In fact, it was Mullion who got off to a flier when they took the lead after just two minutes. Craig Taylor dispossessed Bobby Bryant in midfield and delivered a perfect pass for Matt Fox to break through and score.

It took Town a while to find their feet as Mullion's pace caused problems, but eventually they got a foothold in the game as they started to obtain possession without looking really dangerous or threatening to score.

Matt Ellis missed from six yards after Bright had pulled the goal back, but in the 25th minute they scored a fortunate goal when goalkeeper Mark Rose, under pressure from Matt Pellow, pushed Justin Miles' free kick into his own goal.

Three minutes later Town were in front when Ellis ran on to a back pass and as he went round the 'keeper he was brought down. Rose was lucky to stay on but not so lucky when Miles blasted home the spotkick.

Despite trailing Mullion showed they still had plenty of fight, but they were unable to channel their energy into goalscoring opportunities and left Matt Prynn relatively untroubled.

Mullion's most promising youngster, Matt Fox, had to be substituted after sustaining a groin injury and with it went most of the home side's threat.

Fifteen minutes from time Town put daylight between themselves and Mullion when Duncan Gillett hit a near post corner for Bryant to head his first goal of the season.

"We were disappointed to lose," said manager Danny Hickey "but it is a young side and I think they have adapted very well. We've played some of the top teams in the league and have not been outplayed.

"What we need to do now is to sustain the level of performance and with a couple of players to return we will get stronger.

"We've got St Just on Saturday and everyone is looking forward to it."
