I FEEL compelled to protest about the views expressed by the Skipper regarding the situation with the local Conservative Association ("Tory should do the decent thing and resign!").I am amazed that the Packet considers it appropriate to print such a homophobic article at all, but it is outrageous that it should be used to stir up anti-gay feeling in the way that it does.

There may well be genuine reasons why the Conservative management team think that Mr. Crossley is not suitable as their local Parliamentary candidate; no doubt the Conservative Party (or perhaps, in due course, the electorate) will make a decision about that. However, the outcome should be based on his capability, not his sexuality.

The Skipper states that whatever the reason for the current feelings against Mr Crossley (ie, if it is because of his sexuality), he should do the honourable thing and resign. I am at a loss to see what is "honourable" about resigning because someone else objects to his sexuality. Suggesting this encourages other people to think in the same way, and printing it in the Packet, gives it an illusion of acceptability. Recent employment legislation has been introduced to protect employees from just this sort of discrimination - yet our local paper appears to be promoting bigotry and homophobia.

The West Cornwall Local Strategic Partnership is working to improve the quality of life in the area; this includes action, through a diversity group, to address situations which cause members of any minority group to be marginalised, isolated or discriminated against. As a member of that diversity group, I will ensure that this matter is raised for discussion at the next meeting, as it appears that the local press does not support these ideals.
