WHO is this man Herny? (page 44, September 4 edition). You printed a nice piece about this famous Falmouth artist, but why, oh why did you miss-spell his name no less than 11 times? His name was Hemy, not Herny. He is well remembered in St Mary's parish. The house he built on land next to the church which he named Churchfield is now the Athanaeum Club in Kimberley Place.
He had ten children who were contemporaries with my father's family of 11 children. My father used to tell me of the friendly rivalry between the two families, and it seems they got up to high jinks sometimes, especially at Sunny Cove. The entries in our baptism register here record the baptisms of all the children of both families.
Two of Hemy's boys became priests and we have here, and use regularly, two silver chalices given by the parents, one was given to one of the priest-sons and the other to the small chapel in Penryn, which no longer exists.
Canon Bede Davis, parish priest, St Mary's, Falmouth
EDITOR'S NOTE: Apologies for the spelling error. The article was submitted by fax and, due to poor reproduction, a member of staff misread Hemy as Herny.
