I AM writing with reference to the suggestion that people may be charged to go on the Prince of Wales Pier. Firstly, the access to where I live is on the pier so I would be interested in how this would affect me! Secondly, I think it is a crazy idea anyway.

The pier, while it offers lovely views and a sunny spot to sit down and watch the boats go by, does not exactly rival Brighton in its list of attractions and nor should it.

Charging people to simply wander down and spend some time in this peaceful spot is madness! There are many other peaceful spots in Falmouth and surrounding areas that are free to use. Also, coupled with the rise in charges for boat operators, the businesses on the pier could be hit if people are put off by the charge - however small. How about a voluntary collection box for those who love the area to show their appreciation? Claire Parsons, Market Strand, Falmouth

So you upset everybody with the possible parking fees at Pendennis Point. Now you want to charge to go on the Prince of Wales pier.

If you want to raise some money why not enforce the driving ban in Falmouth that is now from 11am to 4pm and is ignored by almost everyone? I think if you posted two traffic wardens at the entrance to Church Street car park and pulled over all the people driving and not stopping to park you would raise a good sum of money. That is if they would write tickets and stop giving warnings!

But how about a better idea, put a toll gate at the start of Market Street and charge £2. That would include a specified time to use any parking area in Falmouth. Or the right to drive through town.

Now for the lorries that are still loading and unloading between 11am and 4pm, they need to be fined as well as the shops receiving the goods. I think you are waiting till someone is killed on the streets of Falmouth before you plan to do anything about the traffic that pays no attention to the ban. CARRICK district councillors must be made aware that Prince of Wales pier is Falmouth's only arrival/departure point for its two public service ferries: Falmouth/Flushing for 300 years and Falmouth/St Mawes of more recent date. As our elected representatives they have a duty to ensure that public access is neither restricted nor subject to charges. Name and address supplied

I HAVE just returned to Australia after spending five enjoyable weeks with family in Falmouth. The only thing to mar our stay were the high charges for parking. To now reintroduce a charge for entry onto the Prince of Wales Pier will discourage tourists to enter Falmouth by road and sea. Why don't the council ask the Prince of Wales to help maintain the Pier named after him. I know he can afford it! Richard Johns, Hawford Way, Willetton, Western Australia

HERE we go again, plans to charge at Pendennis Point have been dropped, so let's think up something else. I know, we will charge to go on the Prince of Wales Pier and also put up the fees for the boat operators. Why? Falmouth gets plenty of trade from the pleasure boats, why penalise them? (Do coaches have to pay when they drop passengers off?). Trips will cost more to cover the increase, paid by us. The new toll gates will cost thousands of pounds to build and then someone to man them. Susan Coulls, Venton Road, Falmouth

WHAT are the council doing - trying to make everything pay as you go? Put an extra 10p on parking already there and they will soon get what they need. Alison Treglown, Salisbury
