ON leaving school, Caroline Thompson, of Hendra Vean, found herself doing the last thing she ever wanted to do - working in an office.

At the age of 25 she packed in her job at a Truro insurance company, re-sat her A-levels and GCSEs and put herself through Middlesex University studying the arts of traditional Chinese medicine. The five-year course included a four-month placement in the birthplace of the ancient tradition, Beijing.

"It was a total culture shock for me," said Caroline. "It was grey and dusty and really busy but as spring came and we explored the city I really liked it.

"The centre is amazing, it was like New York or Tokyo with bright lights, space age buildings and shops that never close."

Learning from native doctors in two teaching hospitals, Caroline eventually received her certificate from the Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Caroline said: "In China, western and Chinese medicine are on an equal footing, and they use the techniques to treat major illnesses including cancer and diabetes. Chinese medicine takes a holistic approach incorporating mind, body and soul."

Caroline, also known by her Chinese name Kai Lin, is now qualified to carry out acupuncture, acupressure, Chinese massage and the administering of herbs. She is due to start practising from a clinic in Truro and will make home visits.
