THE sporting world was left all the poorer last week after it learned of the unexpected death of Andy Ayres last Thursday.

He was 57.

Andy, as well as being a businessman, was a familiar figure on the Cornish sporting scene in the late 1980s when he helped St Gluvias win the county cricket title.

He was also reponsible for bringing one of the biggest names in international cricket, Eldine Baptiste, to the Kernick Road club, a move that attracted huge interest wherever the West Indian Test player appeared.

Andy had a real love for cricket and when the Cornwall County Youth Cricket Festival was born, Andy sponsored the competition through Dales Garage of Falmouth.

His funeral takes place at the Trelawny Chapel, Penmount Crematorium at midday on Friday, but the family have requested that no-one wears black or mourning dress.

He is survived by his wife Betty and children Cheryl and Duncan.

Flowers, or donations if preferred, to be shared between the Cornwall Air Ambulance and the British Heart Foundation and may be given to the funeral director, Mr Kingsley Tresidder, Kennall Vale, Ponsanooth, TR3 7HG.
