REASATURDAY saw a remarkable end to the division seven (west) cricket league with the story of two catches involving a grandfather and his grandson playing for title rivals Camborne and Redruth which saw the championship destination change hands in a few minutes at grounds 30 miles apart .

Camborne began the day 13 points clear at the top and were visiting lowly Chacewater whilst Redruth were at promotion rivals Penzance knowing only a 20 points victory would give them any chance of the title.

Scores and text messages flowed between grounds as the tension grew with the news that Camborne had lost but had taken seven points thanks to a sensational flying catch in the gully by 12-year-old Dominic James- Batchelor to get what eventually provedto be the vital extra point.

This meant that the only way Redruth could take the title was 20 points - with more wins - which seemed on the cards with grandad Dave James still at the crease with yet another unbeaten 50 and only a handfull of runs needed for victory, only to be caught on the boundary (again) going for the winning runs ,and dropping the crucial point to hand the title to Camborne.

Dave was absolutely gutted when told the news, but had the consolation of passing legend Peter Thomas's record run total of 761 - ending with 787runs for the season and promotion!

Congratulations to Camborne, but also to Redruth's players -especially the youngsters. They can be very proud of their achievment during the season . . . and grandad has taken some terrible ribbing from the grandson already!
