CAMBORNE, newly promoted to South West II, began with a confident display to defeat their Somerset visitors.

Against much bigger opponents the Cherry &and Whites pack competed superbly in the loose with flanker Kevin Penrose outstanding and big games coming from stand-in lock Sean Oates, No 8 Ali Durant and hooker Andrew Smith.

Young full back David Mankee gave the home side a fourth minute lead with a simple penalty equalised minutes later by Iain Marshall.

Midway through the half Mankee put over an angled penalty to make the score 6-3 and Camborne then enjoyed a sustained period of pressure in Hornets territory. Finally, pressure was converted into points when prop Adam Coombes was driven over wide out for a debut senior try.

Hornets were stung into a response and was delivered by fly half Gary Biggins who broke out from his own half on a long solo run to the try line. Full back Marshall converted to reduce the deficit to 11-10 at the break.

Taking over the place kicking duties, skipper Ian Morgan kicked an early second half penalty but a 55th minute Marshall success again brought the teams to within one point.

In a purple patch around the hour mark, Town then put the result beyond doubt by delivering two tries in as many minutes.

With a visiting lock finally sin binned for pulling down the lineout, incessant pressure on the Hornets line ended with left wing Peter Butler squeezing over in the corner for fly half Morgan to convert majestically from the touchline.

After the visitors failed to restart correctly Camborne attacked from the resulting scrum on halfway. Durant and industrious scrum half Brett Wakfer combined to send Mankee racing clear down the right and he timed his inside pass delightfully to give wing Kelvin Smitham the opportunity to scorch in for the game's outstanding try.

Leading 26-13 the home side controlled the closing exchanges and 10 minutes from time Morgan put his side out of sight with a second well- struck penalty goal.
