THE chief executive of Yeovil-based leather manufacturers Pittards, John Pittard, has left the post after 40 years with the firm.

Mr Pittard's departure has brought to an end six generations of his family's involvement with the business.

Stephen Boyd has taken over the reigns and he is confident the firm in on the road to recovery after enduring the toughest trading period in its 178-year history.

Only last week the firm announced it had made a £1.2-million loss. The figures showed turnover for the six months to the end of June had fallen from £43.5-million to £38.5-million.

Among savings now being considered by Mr Boyd is the sale or closure of its raw materials division in Scotland which employs 63 people. More worryingly, however, is that voluntary job losses are being sought from the 300-strong Yeovil workforce.
