POSTERS urging people to think about the consequences of drunken violent behaviour are going to be displayed in pubs and clubs throughout Yeovil.

As part of Operation Fahrenheit, Yeovil's polices response to the increase in violent crime the posters will be displayed in Pubwatch members premises throughout the town.

The posters aim to make people think about the consequences of getting involved in a drunken fight.

The first asks the question - do you want a criminal record because you can't handle your drink?

The second uses a photograph of a model with a scar and says 'she has a permanent reminder of your drunken night.'

Robberies in the town centre beat area of Yeovil are currently down by 40 per cent but violent crime is up by 31 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Sergeant Jackie Gold said: "Through Operation Fahrenheit we have been sending a clear message to violent criminals that they are not welcome in Yeovil.

"Pubwatch has been fully supportive of our measures to make Yeovil a safer place to be on a night out and people who are arrested for a violent offence in the town is banned from all the members premises.

"This ban has an impact on the offenders social life but they also need to think about the other consequences of their behaviour.

"A criminal record can affect their whole future and their behaviour could also leave somebody scarred for life.

"We are urging people to think when they drink - is that extra drink, or that fight really worth it?"

Town centre manager and Pubwatch vice-chairman Nina Higgins said: "I am delighted to support the launch of this initiative.

"Alcohol-related violent crime is a national concern and is something that must be addressed by us all.

"Yeovil has taken great strides in reducing crime and disorder, but aggressive behaviour in any form is totally unacceptable and by working closely in partnership with other relevant agencies, I do believe that we can continue to make our town a safer place where people can enjoy their leisure time."
