A BIG thumbs-up sign has been given to the enhancement scheme that has been carried out in the centre of Yeovil.

Members of Yeovil Town Council said this week that they were overall pleased with the scheme which has made it much more pedestrian-friendly for shoppers and no longer is the Borough area clogged up with motorists.

The scheme was implemented in January 2003 to restrict shoppers from driving through the centre of town as part of an overall enhancement project for the Borough.

Councillors heard on Tuesday that a review of the scheme had been carried out and a few adjustments would be made to iron out a few minor problems.

But Yeovil's Deputy Mayor, Cllr Tony Lock, said: "It is a definite improvement in the Borough and now these new proposals will enhance the area even further. This scheme should be pressed on with as soon as possible."

There have been a number of problems since the scheme was introduced, but Somerset County Council's principal traffic planner Mike Bellamy told councillors that overall it had been well received.

Mr Bellamy said: "A scheme of this nature will always be contentious. It is inevitable that the scheme will not please everyone.

"But on the balance it is felt that there has been considerable support for the enhancement scheme from local residents, shoppers, councillors, traders, the bus company, the Chamber of Trade and the town centre manager."

Mr Bellamy said there were a number of strong positives to be taken from the scheme with the improved pedestrian-friendly environment and increased safety top of the list.

He also said there was now easier access to public transport, improved cycle facilities, increased parking facilities for disabled people, and a reduction in pollution and congestion in the area.
