Falmouth have all but guaranteed third place in the ECB Premier League following a comprehensive win over Grampound Road on a turning wicket at the weekend.

Batting first, the visiting side lost their skipper Sean Hooper to a ball from Chris Hunkin that kept a little low before Stephen Williams and Adrian Noott steadied the ship. Both managed half centuries to put on 94 for the second wicket on a difficult pitch.

The introduction of spinners Martin Roberts and Martin Pearce put the brakes on the Falmouth scoring as they lost Williams to Pearce for a well made 62, before Roberts picked up the wicket of Antony Angove, and then Noott who chipped a simple return catch to fall for 56.

The loss of Noott signalled a collapse for the visitors as four wickets fell whilst the score remained on 159. Thankfully Sean Turner and Mark Burley got the scoreboard moving again, and a flamboyant 17 not out from David Neville, saw Falmouth fall just short of the desired 200 target.

However, with the home side unable to claim the final wicket, honours were even at tea.

With the wicket clearly conducive to spin, Falmouth elected not to take the new ball, and opened the bowling with David Toseland, a decision that paid off immediately as an attempted sweep from Martin Pearce simply ballooned in the air for a simple catch to Greg Stephens.

Sean Turner then clean bowled Peter Davey in the next over, and the home side had lost two wickets without a run being scored.

Martin Roberts and Chris Hunkin had put on 57 when Noott caught Roberts at silly mid-off from the bowling of Toseland for 18. The introduction of David Neville saw spin at both ends, and he soon got into the action trapping Kris Harris lbw and bowling Hunkin for 32. In the meantime, Toseland had claimed two further wickets.

With wickets falling regularly, the only high point for the home side was Malcolm Hooper's innings of 22, all from the bowling of Neville, but it was the Falmouth man who had the last say, bowling Hooper to wrap up a comfortable 100 run win.
